Funding genetic research to find solutions for incurable terminal illnesses.
Our Genetics and Genomics Clubs delve into the core principles of genetics, focusing on the structure and function of genes at the molecular level. We explore the building blocks of life, genes, examining genetic variation and the mechanisms of heredity within living cells. Students are also introduced to genomics, and are taught to apply bioinformatic tools to research microarray data.
At the end of the year, students apply the knowledge they have learned throughout the year into an annual expo, where they have the opportunity to present their findings and delve deeper experimentally into genetics. Learn more about club activities here.
Beyond weekly club activities, we are engaged in making genetics and science a more equitable field for all students. We achieve this by: fundraising for necessary science classroom materials; holding free workshops at local schools and events; creating support systems for WiSTEM and hosting WiSTEM Panels; and providing free learning materials and notes for students. Thus far, we have raised more than 400 dollars for a classroom in Washington, D.C., and have held a WiSTEM Panel hosting 6 highly accomplished women.
Our other major focus is in funding research to find solutions for incurable terminal illnesses. This year's disease of focus is pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease characterized by scarring in patients' lungs. The progression of damage in lung tissue makes it hard for those with the disease to expand their lungs and get enough oxygen to their body. Pulmonary fibrosis is currently incurable, with a life expectancy of 3-5 years, but this estimate is increasing as newer medicines and treatments progress, with some reporting life expectancies of 10+ years. This especially highlights the necessity of continued support in pulmonary fibrosis research.
